Our story
Lucienne, a passionate interior designer, has always favored natural materials like linen, marble, and wood in her décor. Seeking a pure, natural table setting, she looked for wooden tableware that was food-safe. While she found various wooden items in stores, they were only suitable for dry foods and didn’t meet her standards for appearance, quality, or durability. Inspired, she decided to create her own stylish, practical, and sustainable solution. In collaboration with a friend living in Asia, she researched and selected Khaya mahogany—an aesthetically pleasing, food-friendly hardwood sourced from sustainably managed forests in Vietnam.
I have always been passionate about the outdoors. Nature’s organic shapes, vibrant colors, and peacefulness constantly inspire me, providing a sense of renewed energy. Speeking of which: my experience in the wind energy industry has also shaped my understanding of sustainable solutions, the importance of reducing CO2 emissions and its impact on our planet. The idea of creating my own business centered around eco-friendly products has been a dream of mine ever since. I firmly believe that making environmentally conscious choices can contribute to preserving our planet for future generations.
When my mother shared her idea of creating wooden tableware and showed me the first handcrafted samples from Vietnam, I was immediately enthusiastic. She asked me to transforming her vision into a conceptual design and creating a visual identity for it. I genuinely love the design process, and building the Khaya brand together with my mother and sister has been an incredibly fulfilling journey. Additionally, I share my mother’s passion for nature and it's wonderful to see how our mutual love for nature, design, and sustainability comes together in Khaya, creating something both beautiful and meaningful.
Within Khaya I can perfectly combine my passions for nature, food design, and photography. When my mom showed me the wooden dinner plates, I was immediately inspired to create delicious recipes and capture them through my lens. While studying Future Planet Studies, I introduced the Imperfection Box for Khaya, driven by a sustainable mindset. This initiative ensures that all our products are used, with nothing going to waste.
After returning from my trip across Vietnam, I felt more inspired than ever. Meeting our producers and experiencing the kindness and warmth of the Vietnamese people—who truly felt like friends—deepened my connection to our mission. And above all, working together as a family makes it all so much more rewarding and enjoyable.
